Section One - Sending Email
The sending mailserver looks up the domain name in the email address to find the mailserver associated with that domain. This is where it sends the message, though it may not go directly to the destination server. Depending on how both servers are configured, as well as the networks between them, the email may be passed to several different mailservers on its way from sender to receiver. Each time the message is passed from one server to another, a header is added recording the date, time, servers sending and receiving, and other technical information.

Once the email reaches the destination server, that server looks to the username at the beginning of the email address and files the message in the account indicated. When the recipient connects to download the email, the message will reach their email program. This program will not only let them read the email, but also look at the headers and see how the message reached them.
