Introduction 2
Spam is a substantial problem due to how little effort and money it takes to send. Virtually all spam related costs are shouldered by the receivers of spam and the service providers whose servers it travels through. Sending spam is virtually cost-free for the sender. Aside from mostly advertising garbage, illegal goods and services or outright frauds, spam can eat up a tremendous amount of technical resources and hours of work for ISP employees.

We have at times seen our bandwidth usage jump by up to a factor of 10 due to spam traffic. While some might object that you can just hit "delete" to deal with unwanted email, the sheer volume of email involved, and what that volume could expand to if unchecked, can create tremendous problems for Internet providers and users alike.

There are a number of methods for dealing with spam, and the more people know about how to report, track and block it the more effectively this problem can be managed.
