Section One - Email Addresses and Forged Headers
At one point a common basis for blocking email was the domain name from the email address. An email from a domain known for spamming or promoted in spam emails might be refused as likely spam. This address is recorded in the headers of the email, but since that is simply text added to the email by the sending program, a spammer can easily claim the email is from a different email address. This would usually be one with no connection to the spam, but there is as yet no certain way to tell if the address in the "from:" header is actually the domain the email came from. This practice is referred to as "forging headers" or "spoofing" the email address.

Because headers are so easy to forge, the email address information is no longer a basis used for blocking spam. Despite this, forging headers remains a common practice among spammers and still constitutes a problem. This not only makes it difficult for a machine to tell which emails to block and which to let through, the spam looks like it originates from a domain not involved in spamming in any way. This results in spam complaints against innocent parties and can create a great deal of trouble for the owners of the faked domain names.
