Section One - Blocking Based on Servers
In many cases emails are blocked based on the identity of the sending mailserver. Mailservers run by spammers, or identified as machines a great deal of spam is sent through, can be refused when they try to connect to other mailservers. To get around this, spammers often send through relays or proxies. Since email is normally passed through a number of servers on its way to the recipient, spammers can take advantage of this to disguise the actual origin of their email.

Most mailservers, relays and proxies these days are configured to limit what servers they will accept email from. If they will send along email from any source they are said to be "open" proxies or relays and are considered a spam risk. There are a number of lists of open proxies and relays, which are used as a basis upon which to refuse email. If a mailserver makes it onto a blocking list, mailservers enforcing that list will refuse email from that server until the relaying is closed and the list owners are notified so they can remove it from the list.
