Section One - Blocking Email
One of the main ways the spam problem is dealt with is to try and use software of various kinds to block the emails. There are many ways this can be done, some of them involving a complex analysis of incoming email. Most email providers and programs provide some spam blocking functions, and there is other software available to end-users to block spam as they download it to their systems.

Blocking it at the end user level is only partly effective however, as it still leaves the spam circulating and taking up mailserver resources and bandwidth. So a great deal of blocking takes place on mailservers before the email reaches the destination. This is usually based on the origin of the email, either the sending mailserver or the IP address it is from.
