Section One • Using an Unpublished Primary

There are times when it is undesirable for the primary nameserver to be fielding requests for domain names directly. This can be for security or performance reasons, or cases where the primary nameserver is run through a DSL line or is otherwise not connected to the internet full time. In these cases the whois record would list only the secondary nameservers, with the SOA records specifying an unlisted nameserver as the primary.

In this case the primary nameserver would be used only for editing and maintaining the zone file. It would not be asked for the domain by local resolution nameservers as it is not listed on the whois record or in the NS records of the zone file. The primary would transfer the zone file to the secondary nameservers which would reply to all requests for the domain, so the primary need only be online long enough for changes to be copied to the secondaries if that is an issue.
