Section One • SOA Settings 1/2

The SOA settings specify the primary nameserver and email address for the individual responsible for the maintenance of the DNS. Also included is a serial number indicating the version of the zone file you are looking at, and a series of times expressed as numbers of seconds. In the example below, ns1.easydns.com is listed as the primary nameserver and admin@easydns.com is the email address listed as responsible for the domain.

The serial number is important to the management of DNS, because it is checked by the secondary nameservers before they attempt a zone transfer to see if the information has changed. If you make a change on the primary nameserver and leave the serial number alone, the secondary nameservers will see that the serial has not changed. This indicates that the zone file is the same version as the one they have, and they will not transfer the zone. So each time a change is made on the primary nameserver, the serial number needs to be incremented to a higher number than the serial on the secondary nameservers, indicating a subsequent version of the file.
