Section Two • Records on the Primary Nameserver

In the meantime you'll need to make sure that the DNS is set up properly on the primary nameserver. This is one aspect of the service in which we cannot be of much assistance, as these records are on the client's nameserver rather than ours. Also there are different types of nameserver software available, so we cannot provide instruction on how to create the records on the primary. There are a few details specifically related to secondary DNS you will need to be aware of, though.

The most important thing about the nameserver software you use is that it support "notify packets" and that the notify feature is turned on. This allows our nameservers to receive notification when a change is made so that we can reload the zone and keep all the files up to date. In this regard it is also important to have the following NS records set up in the domain's zone file.

;	NS RECORDS
;
    IN NS	ns1.easydns.com.
    IN NS	ns2.easydns.com.
    IN NS	remote1.easydns.com.
    IN NS	remote2.easydns.com.
    IN NS	remote3.easydns.com.

This informs the primary nameserver where to send the notify packets and forms an important DNS level record of what nameservers are responsible for the domain name. If you are listing your primary nameserver on the whois record you would also include an NS record pointing to that machine's hostname. For an unpublished primary you would want the NS records to specify only the above.
