Section Two • The New Owner's Information

The first change that will need to be made in changing the ownership is for the current owner to update the whois record to reflect the new ownership of the domain. So the new owner will need to provide the current owner with the details to include in the whois record for the domain. This will need to include both the information for the registrant and the admin contact, which may or may not be the same depending on the new owner.

The new owner should double-check this information to ensure accuracy before sending it to the current owner of the domain, since this will constitute the ownership of the domain. While in many cases errors can be corrected, if the name of the owner or the admin contact's email address is incorrect this can create problems in gaining access to the domain and making changes. Please be certain of the details before changes are committed.

One important distinction regarding the registrant field is to be clear as to whether an organisation or an individual owns the domain. If a domain is being purchased by a business, and the registrant is mistakenly marked as being the individual responsible for the transaction, this could create problems if they were to leave the company as they would then be the legal owner. If the new owner is an organisation, it is important to differentiate the registrant information, which will be a company, from that of the admin contact, which would need to be an individual.
