Section One • The Whois Record

The authoritative public record of a domain is the domain's whois record, which is a text file listing basic information regarding the domain, including the owner, contact persons for the domain, and the nameservers for the domain. While the .ca whois record presents substantially the same information as the whois of other TLDs, it is structured differently in being composed of 2 parts.

If you look under the description section of the whois record, you will see 3 numbers listed, for the registrar, registrant and domain. The registrar number refers to the company responsible for maintaining the domain with CIRA on behalf of the owner. The other 2 numbers are assigned to the registrant and the domain, which are the 2 parts of the whois record. The domain itself, identified by the number, includes the domain name, whether it is a registered trademark, and the nameservers assigned to it. All contact and registrant information is included and managed through the registrant account.

The same registrant account can manage any number of domains, all of which would thus have the same contact and registrant information. The registrant account has an associated ID# and password for use in confirming changes to the domains managed through it.
