While it is vital that the contact information on the whois record be accurate and up to date, the whois record is in the public domain and thus registrants have legitimate privacy concerns regarding their personal information.

The email address, while particularly important since most domain business must be confirmed through it, is often harvested for spamming purposes. One way around this is a filtered email address such as those provided through myprivacy.ca. Myprivacy is a free service provided by easyDNS which allows you to create an email address @myprivacy.ca which forwards to your usual email address, but filters what is sent. If the email is from CIRA or a participating .ca registrar the message is passed straight through and you receive it as normal. If not, the message is subjected to a challenge and response procedure which prevents automated messages from reaching you, so they can only go through if there is a person sending it to respond to the challenge.

Another point of concern for many is having a phone number visible on a public record. While registrars and CIRA need to have a phone number for the contacts of a domain, many object to this information being made public on privacy grounds. Because of this, CIRA does not require the phone number for the admin contact to be made public. While you will need to enter this information while registering the domain, if you would like to hide your phone number so that it is not publicly visible then you will need to email support@easydns.com with your domain name, the phone number that you would like CIRA to keep on private file, and the answers to the security questions found in the member information section of your easyDNS members page.
