Domain names, used on the internet for websites and email, are classed according to their TLD, or Top Level Domain, which is the 2 to 4 letter section of the domain following the ".", such as .com, .info and .ca. Each TLD has a registry associated with it which maintains the list of all domains within that TLD and sets the rules for how the TLD will function. For .ca domains the registry is the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).

CIRA, as the central registry, sets the policies and rules for the registration of .ca domains. Since these rules and policies are in some ways difficult to follow, it is best to be aware of the differences between .ca and other domain registries at the outset.
