Section Two • Conflicting Domains

If the domain is unavailable, the interface will tell you so at this point and give you the opportunity to register another domain name.

Within the .ca registry it is possible for a domain to be unavailable for reasons other than it already being registered by another party. For example the names of some towns are reserved for municipal level domains in case the municipality wants to create and administer such a domain.

Another cause of unavailable domains relates to the different level domains within the .ca registry, the province level domains such as .bc.ca or .on.ca and .ca itself. If the same name is registered in a different level, for example you are trying to register domain.on.ca and someone else already owns domain.bc.ca or domain.ca, these are considered "conflicting domains" and the new domain cannot be registered automatically.

If you try to register a .ca domain and run into trouble because of a conflicting domain, you may still be able to register the domain name you want. You will need to visit CIRA's webpage and check the whois record to find the admin contact for the conflicting domain. You then need to email that person explaining the situation and requesting their permission to register the domain you were attempting. If this permission is granted, you then need to contact our support department to proceed with the registration.
