Section One • TXT Records

Rather than introduce a new kind of DNS record for SPF, which would require waiting for the new specs to be implemented by all DNS providers and software, SPF makes use of an existing record type, the TXT record. This is a multi purpose record which allows someone to assign any text string of less than 255 characters to a host name.

This can be used for a simple description or notes about a host, but by formatting the text it can be used to provide technical information to other servers, which is what the SPF protocol does. A mailserver enforcing the SPF protocol checks the txt records for the domain in the email address and looks for one that begins with "v=spf1" which tells it that this txt record is intended for use with the SPF protocol.
