Section One • DNS records for reverse lookup

Once the delegation step has been completed, you will need to ensure that the appropriate DNS record is set up on the nameserver for the IP address.

The main type of DNS record that you are concerned with for reverse DNS is the PTR record (PTR is short for pointer). These records "point" the IP in the reversed in-addr.arpa format to the correct domain name or hostname. The user interface to accomplish this task is show below.




The "host" is the final destination of the reverse DNS lookup, and definitively points the IP address to the appropriate host name/domain name. Once a computer performing a reverse lookup has found and received the data from this kind of record, the process is completed and reverse DNS has successfully done its job.
