Section One • How email is sent 2/2

Once the sending mailserver has sent the message to the recipient's mailserver, that receiving mailserver looks at the beginning of the email address, which specifies the email account. The receiving mailserver will file the message in the appropriate mailbox until the recipient logs in and uses his or her email software to download the email for the account.

This is just a basic outline of the process as, in practice, it can get much more complicated than that. Email is often sent through several servers on its way to the destination and servers are often pooled together to maximise performance. None the less, though there may be many more than just 2 mailservers involved, the general outline of the process is the same.
