Section One • How email is sent 1/2

Naturally the email process begins in the program used to type out and send messages, entering the address in the "to:" field for the message. This program will have a series of settings which specify a "mailserver" to send the message through.

When the sending mailserver receives the message, it looks to the address to find the domain name, the part of the address to the right of the @ character. The mailserver then checks the domain name to find the mailserver you are sending to, and sends the email there.
