Section Two • Bounce messages and other notes

There is a tremendous number of things that can potentially go wrong with email delivery, whether forwarded or not, but most of them involve the email bouncing back to the sender rather than arriving at the recipients email account. When this happens the sender will receive a "bounce message" giving a summary of the problem, the headers of which will show the servers it passed through and the times involved. This information is very useful in troubleshooting the problem, so it is advisable to include it any time you are contacting our support department about an email forwarding problem.

One issue people often contact us about is the variation in the speed of email forwarding. Since forwarding adds an extra server into the process it does slow down email delivery somewhat, though usually not by very much. While we forward the email as soon as we get it, how fast it arrives at the destination address depends on a number of factors outside our control. This includes connection speeds, server loads, and the various mailservers involved, so we cannot give you any statistics or estimates of the forwarding speed that would be at all helpful.

Another issue which may occasionally come up it that we have a 10 mb limit on the size of emails which are being forwarded through our servers. Files larger than 10 mb should be distributed through other means than email, and if a message with a large attachment bounces it may be useful to check the size of the attachment.
