Section One • Zone Files

There are several different kinds of information contained in the "zone file," which we'll consider in turn. In the example of a zone file given below, you will see a number of sections, each containing a different kind of data regarding the domain. The zone file does not represent how you will see these records represented in the members page, it is included here so that you will be familiar with it if service providers send you information based on a zone file.




The first two sections of a Zone File are the SOA (Start Of Authority) and the NS (Nameserver) records. These contain a great deal of technical information which determines how the nameservers communicate with each other, including timing issues and what servers are the authoritative source for information about the domain. The vast majority of this information is of no real concern for day-to-day domain management; the only part of it you will need to concern yourself with is the "minimum" setting, also called the TTL (Time To Live).
