Section Two • SOA Settings

One of the 2 top sections we have not yet touched upon regards the SOA settings. For most purposes you don't need to change these, but if you do need to make a change which needs to be spread quickly through the internet, you can accomplish this by lowering the "minimum" setting. You will need to lower that at least the current minimum ahead of the actual change, 3 hours by default. Click the "dns" link as before and look to the second section down the page, titled SOA settings.

Select a lower value for the minimum, such as 20 minutes or 1 hour, and click next to go through the confirmation just as when you set the DNS up in the first place. You will need to wait the previous minimum SOA for the change of SOA to propagate. Once this is done you can go back in and make the change, and nameservers will only cache the information for the new lower setting and propagation will occur in that amount of time. When you make the change you will also want to raise the minimum back up to its previous value, to ensure quicker resolution on an ongoing basis.
