Section One • The Overall Process

Once the nameservers for the domain have been located, the "Zone file" for that domain is checked. The zone file is a text file stored on the nameserver(s) containing all the technical information, including the IP addresses, regarding the servers for the domain. The nameserver locates the information being requested in the zone file, and sends it back to the computer or server that requested the information. Nameservers are not involved in actually passing along files or communications; they only provide information on where to find the servers. Information is exchanged directly with those servers once they are found.

Now that your home computer knows the addresses of various servers involved (email, website, etc), it can communicate with them directly - the nameservers have done their job.
