Section Two • Creating MX records

The first section is for the MX record which pertains to the email for your domain. What needs to be entered here depends on what your email arrangements are. The settings below are the default settings for a new domain on our system, and would be correct if you are using our email forwarding. So if we are forwarding your email, you can simply leave this section alone.

If you are using your own mailserver or an ISP's email service you will need the mailserver's hostname to enter here. Both the server you point to and the host or domain in the "zone" field must be hostnames (A records), as an MX record cannot include an IP or a Cname.

When you have the name of the mailserver from your email provider, you leave the domain name in the "zone" field and put the mailserver hostname in the "handled by server field," specifying any low number as the "pref" or preference number. If your provider has given you a list of mailservers with different preference numbers associated with each, you will need to use the "Add an MX record" fields to add these. Just keep your domain name as a host and enter the mail hosts in the "handled by server" fields with the preference numbers they provide for each server.

We'll explain the confirming and committing of the changes once we've gone through the setup of the other records.
