Digital Certificate A digital certificate is an electronic "credit card" that establishes your credentials when doing business or other transactions on the Web. The certificate is issued by a certification authority (CA). It contains your name, a serial number, expiration dates, a copy of the certificate holder's public key (used for encrypting messages and digital signatures), and the digital signature of the certificate-issuing authority so that a recipient can verify that the certificate is real. Digital certificates can be kept in registries so that authenticating users can look up other users' public keys.
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Secure Socket Layer: A protocol that is the web standard for transmitting private information over the Internet. SSL is all about encryption. SSL encrypts data, like credit cards numbers (as well other personally identifiable information), which prevents the "bad guys" from stealing your information for malicious intent. You know that you're on an SSL protected page when the address begins with "https" and there is a padlock icon at the bottom of the page (and in the case of Mozilla Firefox in the address bar as well).
True Business ID (Digital Certificate) A combination of a digital certificate for web servers, and an identity verification seal that verifies the organization. This seal contains the name of the company along with a dynamic date and time stamp. It uses 128-bit SSL encryption
True Business ID Wildcard (Digital Certificate) A digital certificate for web servers that can secure multiple websites that share the same base domain name and server. Also includes an identity verification seal that verifies the organization. This seal contains the name of the company along with a dynamic date and time stamp. It uses 128-bit SSL encryption
Quick SSL (Digital Certificate) A digital certificate for web servers that is quickly generated from the time of order. This certificate authenticates the domain and not the organization. It uses 128-bit SSL encryption.
Quick SSL Premium (Digital Certificate) A digital certificate for web servers, which includes a security site seal with a dynamic date and time stamp. It is quickly generated from the time of order. This certificate authenticates the domain and not the organization. Uses 128-bit SSL encryption
CSR (Certificate Signing Request) A Certificate Signing Request is a text file generated by a Web server which contains the following:
  • Information about your organization (organization name, country, etc.)
  • Your Web or WAP Server's public key.
Geotrust will use the Certificate Signing Request to generate your signed digital certificate.
Encryption The translation of data into a secret code. Encryption is the most effective way to achieve data security.
128bit SSL Encryption SSL certificates come in 40-bit and 128-bit varieties, though 40-bit encryption has been hacked. As such, you definitely should be looking at getting a 128-bit certificate. 128-bit encryption provides a significantly more protection than 40-bit encryption. The numbers "128" and "40" refer to the size of the key used to encrypt the message. Roughly speaking, 128-bit encryption is many, many times stronger than 40-bit encryption. 128-bit encryption represents a very strong method of encryption for the foreseeable future.
Browser ubiquity Browser ubiquity is the term used in the industry to describe the estimated percentage of Internet users that will inherently trust an SSL certificate. The lower the browser ubiquity, the less people will trust your certificate - clearly, if you are operating a commercial site you require as many people as possible to trust your SSL certificate.
Certification Authority (CA) Not just anybody can issue trusted SSL Certificates. If they could then there would be no trust in SSL - and it could no longer be used commercially. Instead only Certification Authorities, or CAs as they are commonly known, can issue trusted SSL Certificates. CAs have generally invested in establishing the technology, support, legal and commercial infrastructures associated with providing SSL certificates.
