ICANN Accreditation FAQ

This document outlines the ramifications of easyDNS™ becoming directly accreditted with ICANN, which happened in early 2003. For the most part it is "business as usual" with your domain names. There will be a slight difference in the way your WHOIS Records appear and renewals of domains on our existing OpenSRS Reseller Tag will be handled slightly differently to bring them into the easyDNS ICANN Tag.

The process of changing over to our own tag involves transferring domains from Tucows to our own ICANN accredited tag when their renewals are processed. This is intended to be a silent transfer without a confirmation email going out, as it is an internal administrative move rather than a true transfer, and this the case for .com and .net domains.

Unfortunately the new .org, .biz and .info registries do not support that functionality as yet. Please disregard the registrar transfer confirmation email (Click here to see an example) that you will receive when you renew your .org .info and .biz domains. The transfer will go through as normal.

Questions & Answers

Who is ICANN? Who is OpenSRS? Who are you guys?
ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is the international non-profit body which oversees the .COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ, .INFO Top-Level Domains (TLDs).

OpenSRS/Tucows is an accreditted ICANN Registrar. Since early 2000 easyDNS has been a Tucows/OpenSRS Reseller. This is why in the past when you registered a domain name the registrar of record appeared in your whois records as:

Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.

We are easyDNS™ and most people use us for our domain management tools, such as using our DNS Nameservers, email forwarding and URL Forwarding. In many cases people also register their domain names through us, which is why we show up on your current whois records:

Registration Service Provider:

What will happen to existing domains with other registrars that I transfer to you now?
All existing domains transferred to us from other registrars are coming onto our new ICANN Registrar Tag. After the transfer completes you will see this in your whois records:

Registrar of Record: easyDNS Technologies, Inc.

Please note if you stay with your existing registrar and simply change to our nameservers to ours in order to use our DNS service, your Whois record will not change.

What will happen to existing domains, already on easyDNS when they come up for renewal?
If your domain is on our OpenSRS/Tucows Reseller tag: We will renew your domain by doing a Registrar Transfer from OpenSRS to easyDNS. This will extend your domain's registration by 1 year.

It is important to note that this takes a couple of days to complete. When you remit your renewal invoice we will initiate the transfer. You will not need to do anything but be aware that you will not see the added year on your domain for a couple days. There will not be a registrar transfer confirmation email sent to you. Since most customers renew well in advance of their domain expiry this is not an issue.

If your domain is less than 10 days away from expiry when you remit your renewal invoice, we will renew the domain in place at OpenSRS to ensure no loss of functionality. We'll try again when you come up for renewal again to convert you over to our registrar tag.

If you just use us for DNS or Forwarding and have a third party registrar: Nothing changes, although it may be a great time to re-evaluate why you're paying two separate bills for DNS or Forwarding and Registry fees when you can Registrar Transfer to easyDNS and consolidate everything together.

What if I want to stay on your system, but keep my domain on your OpenSRS Reseller Tag when it comes up for renewal?
If for any reason you would like to remain on our OpenSRS Reseller Tag instead of being switched over, you can contact support. Be sure to supply

• The domain name.
• The invoice number of the renewal invoice.
• Do this BEFORE you remit payment on the invoice and await confirmation that we've set you up to "Renew In Place".

Is there any functional difference between a domain on the system under your OpenSRS Reseller Tag and one on the system under your new ICANN Tag?

No, our user interface will allow you to do nameserver delegations and edit your whois records regardless of which tag you are on. DNS settings and forwarding are unaffected by which tag the domain is using.

What if I renew my domain for multiple years when I get converted over?
We will do the registrar transfer to our new tag as described above which will add the first year to your domain. Once that process completes (allow 2 or 3 days) we will then add the remaining years. (Unlike some registrars, when you pay for multiple years on easyDNS, those years are added to your domain right away. Other registrars may keep the money and renew you one year at a time for over the renewal period.)

Does this affect my .CA domains?
No. This affects COM/NET/ORG/BIZ/INFO (a.k.a .CNOBI) only. We have already been directly accreditted with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) since 2000.

How will a silent transfer affect my abilities to transfer the domain to anoyther registrar?
Silent transfers work the same way as a normal registrar transfers do and as such you will not be able to move the domain to another registrar for 60 days after the silent transfer completes.
