Mail Restrictions in Place at easyDNS

As a mail forwarder on the internet, we receive a lot of mail for a lot of customers and a lot of it is spam and viruses. Unfortunately, this is getting worse as time goes on, so much so that we recently had to expand our server pool and step up our filtering and restrictions. Without doing so, our forwarding sufferred unacceptable performance degradation.

What follows is a list of restrictions and filters in place on easyDNS mailhubs.

If you are an easyDNS customer you should know that these measures are reducing the amount of inbound spam you receive considerably. To give you an idea of the type of mail that you aren't getting because of these measures you can see recent dumps of what has been rejected from the mail hubs in the last 60 seconds for each restriction.

If your mail server is being rejected by our mailservers we are probably the least of your problems. If we are rejecting your email then a lot of other places are too. Your problem will not fix itself and will not go away or lessen over time. It will get worse and fewer and fewer networks will accept your mail. There are ways to get unblocked for every method sited below, your first priority should be to secure your mailserver against open relays, bring your DNS into compliance and get rid of any spammers you may be providing services to.

Filters in place on easyDNS:

The Spamhaus SBL
The Spamhaus Block List (SBL) is a free realtime DNS-based database of IP addresses of verified spammers, spam gangs and spam support services. The SBL is used by ISPs and corporate networks worldwide to protect customers and mail servers from persistent spammers and currently protects the mailboxes of an estimated 80 million Internet users.

Spam and Open Relay Blocking System (SORBS)
The Spam and Open Relay Blocking System (SORBS) blocks email routed through hosts known to be compromised based on a list of servers.

Distributed Server Boycott List
The DSBL lists contain the IP addresses of servers which have relayed special test messages to listme@listme.dsbl.org; this can happen if the server is an open relay, an open proxy or has another vulnerability that allows anybody to deliver email to anywhere, through that server. Note that DSBL itself doesn't do any tests; it simply listens for incoming test messages and lists the server that delivers the message to DSBL's mail server.
