Anti Spam

Spam Concerns

One of the greatest aggravations for Internet users, and also one of the most significant concerns facing Internet Businesses, is the proliferation of unsolcitied bulk email, commonly refered to as Spam. The volume of mail that this practice can generate is not only an inconveience to the end users of email systems, but can cause slowdowns and interruptions in services when it gets too far out of hand. And it can easily get out of hand due to how little effort and money it takes to send. Virtually all Spam related costs are shouldered by the recievers of spam and the service providers who's servers it travels through, it is virtually cost free for the sender.

Aside from mostly advertising garbage, or even illegal goods and services or out right frauds, Spam can eat up a tremendous ammount of technical resources and hours of work for ISP employees. We ourselves have at times seen our bandwidth usage jump by up to a factor of 10 due to Spam traffic. While some might object that you can just hit "delete" to deal with unwanted email, the sheer volume of email involved, and what that volume could expand to if unchecked, can create tremendous problems for Internet providers and users. If you want more detail on why Spam is such a significant problem spam.abuse.net has a good discussion of the specific issues involved.

We at easyDNS take pride in being known as one of the most agressivly anti-Spam businesses in our industry, and as part of our comitment to combat this increasing menace to the online community we have created this section of our webpage to detail what we are doing to cut Spam down as much as possible, and what our users can do to help keep Spam out of their accounts and mailservers.

What we are doing about Spam

We have tried to reduce the ammount of spam for those using us for email forwarding by using various blocking services, see the Mail Filters and Restrictions page to see the current filters in place (and in action!).

For those who are concerned about the email address in the whois record being used by spammers, who do have automated methods to "harvest" such email addresses, we provide a free service through MyPrivacy.ca. Sets up an email address @myprivacy.ca which will only forward email which comes from within CIRA or participating ICANN registrars. Any other email is subjected to a "challenge/response" mechanism which automated email will not pass, so any spam sent to the address on the whois record should be bounced. So, at least in most cases, legitimate email will make it through, while spam or other automated messages not from a legitimate source will be stopped.

What to do about Spam

To alert us to spammers who appear to be abusing our system, or otherwise inform us of spam issues that seem to relate to us or our clients, please email abuse@easydns.com so that it is brought to the attention of the people in charge of handling these issues.

Sometimes spammers will fake the email addresses they appear to be sending from, making it appear at first glance that spam is originating from a person or company with no connection to the spammers or the services they are promoting. While there is no simple solution for this problem, there are some things you can do about it.
